Representing West Bloomfield Families

West Bloomfield Township is a short drive from our Bloomfield Hills office, and its family law matters have a recognizable shape: homes that were bought before the marriage or improved during it, businesses that involve parents and siblings as well as spouses, and households where both parents work and both want meaningful time with the children.

Because West Bloomfield is a township rather than a city, residents are sometimes unsure where their case belongs. Divorce, custody, support, and personal protection orders are all handled by the Oakland County Circuit Court, Family Division, in Pontiac.

Premarital and Lakefront Property

A home owned before the marriage is not automatically separate property in a Michigan divorce. If marital income paid the mortgage, funded renovations, or the home was retitled jointly, some or all of its value, and especially its growth during the marriage, may be marital. Lakefront and other high-value homes amplify the stakes because appreciation can exceed the original purchase price.

Tracing what was brought into the marriage, and what happened to it afterward, is document work: closing statements, refinance records, and account histories. Starting that work early is the difference between proving a separate-property claim and merely asserting it.

Family Businesses

When a business is shared with parents or siblings, the divorce can reach people who are not parties to it. The questions are what interest the spouse actually owns, what restrictions an operating agreement places on transfer, and how to value a minority interest without disrupting the company. We work to resolve the marital claim without putting the family business in the middle of the litigation.

Two School Districts, One Schedule

West Bloomfield addresses fall into different school districts, most commonly West Bloomfield School District and Walled Lake Consolidated Schools. When parents separate and one moves within the township or to a neighboring community, the children's school can change with the address unless the custody order addresses it. Under joint legal custody, the choice of school is a decision both parents share, and the parenting time schedule should be built around it rather than the other way around.

FAQs

West Bloomfield Family Law Questions

Is a house I owned before marriage protected in a divorce?

Not automatically. Premarital property starts as separate property, but it can become partly or wholly marital through commingling, joint titling, or marital contributions to its mortgage or improvements. Whether it stays separate depends on the records, so gather closing documents and account statements as early as possible.

Can I file for divorce in Oakland County if my spouse lives elsewhere?

Michigan requires that one spouse has lived in the state for at least 180 days and in the filing county for at least 10 days before filing. If you live in West Bloomfield and meet those requirements, you can file in Oakland County even if your spouse has moved.

Does moving within Oakland County affect custody?

A move of a few miles does not trigger Michigan's 100-mile relocation rule, but it can still change the children's school and the practical parenting schedule. Those changes can require the other parent's agreement or a court order, so address them before the move rather than after.
