Our office is on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills. Divorces here often involve a family business, executive compensation, and a home that carries as much emotional weight as financial value. We build those cases with the detail they require.
Free Consultation: (248) 712-1462Dizik | Kaplan practices from 41100 Woodward Ave., Ste. 200, in Bloomfield Hills. Many of the families we represent live a few minutes from the office, in the City of Bloomfield Hills or in Bloomfield Township, where most homes carry a Bloomfield Hills mailing address.
The address matters less than the issues. Bloomfield Hills divorces tend to turn on valuation: what a closely held business is worth, how restricted stock and deferred compensation are divided, whether the marital home should be sold or bought out, and what level of support the marital lifestyle actually supports. Those are questions of evidence and expert work, not form pleadings.
When one spouse owns or co-owns a business, the divorce is partly a valuation case. The marital share of the business, the owner's real income for support purposes, and whether money has been moved or retained inside the company all have to be established with financial records and, often, a forensic accountant.
Restricted stock units, stock options, and deferred compensation raise a different problem: some of it is earned, some is not yet vested, and some was granted to retain the employee after the divorce. Michigan courts allocate these awards based on what they were intended to compensate. Getting the allocation right can be worth more than any other single issue in the case.

The options are a sale, a buyout by one spouse, or a deferred sale while the children finish school. Each depends on a credible appraisal, on whether the spouse keeping the home can refinance on a single income, and on what the other spouse receives to balance the division.
Depending on the address, children in this area may attend Bloomfield Hills Schools, Birmingham Public Schools, or one of the area's private schools. Under joint legal custody, where a child attends school is a major decision both parents share, and it frequently becomes the fault line in a custody dispute.
Private school tuition is not built into Michigan's base child support calculation. If tuition is part of the children's lives, the judgment should say exactly who pays it and for how long.

Michigan requires at least 60 days from filing to judgment when there are no minor children, and at least six months when there are, although the court can shorten the six-month period in limited circumstances. Contested cases with business valuations or custody disputes usually take longer than the statutory minimum.
The marital portion of a business is part of the marital estate and is divided equitably, which in Michigan does not automatically mean equally. The first fights are usually over what the business is worth and what portion is marital; we address both with financial records and, where needed, an independent valuation.
