Oakland County Divorce Statistics: What the Numbers Actually Show

Divorce statistics get quoted constantly and sourced rarely. This page does it properly: every number below comes from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) vital statistics tables, the official record of divorces by county of occurrence, currently reported through 2023. Where we calculate something from those figures, we say so.

Oakland County Leads Michigan in Total Divorces

Oakland County recorded 2,317 divorces in 2023, more than any other county in the state, including Wayne County despite its larger population. Averaged across the year, that is roughly 45 divorces every week moving through the Oakland County Circuit Court's Family Division (calculated from the MDHHS annual figure).

Two things stand out. First, Oakland County overtook Wayne County in total divorces in 2020 and has held the top spot since. Second, roughly one in nine Michigan divorces now happens in Oakland County: 2,317 of 20,491 statewide in 2023, about 11.3 percent (calculated).

The Rate Tells a Different Story Than the Count

Raw counts reward big populations. Adjusted for population, Oakland County is actually less divorce-prone than Michigan as a whole. From the MDHHS table "Rate of Divorces by County of Occurrence" (persons per 1,000 population):

So the honest summary is: Oakland County has the most divorces in Michigan and a below-average divorce rate, at the same time. Both facts are true; which one gets quoted depends on who is quoting.

Divorce Is Declining, Here and Statewide

Michigan divorces fell from 26,145 in 2019 to 20,491 in 2023, a decline of about 22 percent in five years (calculated from MDHHS totals). Oakland County tracked the same curve, down about 20 percent over the period. The 2020 trough reflects pandemic court disruptions, but the 2022-2023 numbers show the decline is a trend, not a blip; they sit below even the partial-shutdown year.

Fewer divorces does not mean simpler ones.
